Program Update: The Move to Java!
Jim Grisanzio
In this short episode Jim Grisanzio talks about his move to the Java Advocacy Team in Oracle’s Java Platform Group and the coming changes in the podcast. A new name will be announced soon, and we’ll be focusing on profiles of Java developers globally. The format will remain the same in terms of casual conversations one on one or in small groups.
Communities are about people. So, that’s what we’ll be talking about here with Java developers. Who’s doing really cool work? Who’s solving the toughest problems? Who’s creating new opportunities? Who’s new? Who’s been around forever? Everyone has something to contribute. It’ll be great fun.
We’ve already engaged with the Java community in many previous episodes over the years, so we’re looking forward to even more Java from here on in!

(00:00:00):
Hey, it’s Jim.
(00:00:01):
So it’s a new year, 2022.
(00:00:04):
And I teased up at the end of the year last year in December,
(00:00:08):
a few weeks ago,
(00:00:10):
I basically sort of hinted that I would have some news here for 2020.
(00:00:16):
And so here’s the news.
(00:00:18):
I’ve moved from developer relations,
(00:00:21):
which is in corporate marketing at Oracle,
(00:00:25):
to the Java advocacy team in Oracle’s Java platform group.
(00:00:31):
So I moved from marketing to engineering.
(00:00:33):
And this is a really, really cool thing for me.
(00:00:36):
I’m really excited about it.
(00:00:38):
And the next bit is I’m taking the podcast with me.
(00:00:41):
OK, so this entire catalog is coming with me.
(00:00:46):
We’re going to rebrand it.
(00:00:48):
We do have a new name.
(00:00:49):
I can’t say it just yet because it’s not finalized, but we’ll have a new name.
(00:00:53):
You know, you wanted to do anything, everything will be taken care of in the platform itself.
(00:00:57):
And so but the content will change, obviously, to be focused on Java.
(00:01:03):
But specifically the Java community.
(00:01:05):
I mean, that’s what I do.
(00:01:06):
I build communities.
(00:01:07):
I’ve been doing it since open Solaris a long, long time ago.
(00:01:11):
And so and actually even Java, too.
(00:01:14):
When I was at Sun, I was in marketing and I did a lot of work with the Java team at that time.
(00:01:22):
And toward the end of Sun that I moved into Solaris and then that became Oracle.
(00:01:27):
And now a couple of detours later, now I’m going to go back to Java.
(00:01:33):
So this is cool.
(00:01:34):
And I’m going to shoot for one to two episodes per month just to start because I
(00:01:41):
have a whole new job and I have a lot of other projects.
(00:01:46):
But this is the one thing I really, really love to do.
(00:01:50):
And we’ll be focusing on the community globally.
(00:01:53):
I’m really interested in meeting Java developers around the world and find out what
(00:01:59):
they’re doing with the technology and how they’re building the community.
(00:02:03):
how they’re solving hard problems, creating new opportunities, things like that.
(00:02:08):
I’m really interested in meeting up with young people.
(00:02:11):
Java community is huge.
(00:02:13):
I mean, there’s millions and millions of people.
(00:02:16):
And they’re obviously all ages now because the platform has been around for 25 years.
(00:02:23):
And
(00:02:27):
You know,
(00:02:27):
so I’m interested in that sort of that concept of new people filtering into an
(00:02:32):
existing system and the older people working with the young people and the young
(00:02:37):
people sort of learning from the older people,
(00:02:39):
you know,
(00:02:40):
that kind of thing.
(00:02:40):
That whole cycle really,
(00:02:42):
really interests me because there’s very different perspectives when you get
(00:02:46):
someone who’s around for,
(00:02:47):
say,
(00:02:48):
two years versus someone who’s around for 20 years.
(00:02:51):
So that’s really cool,
(00:02:53):
and hopefully sometime in 2022 we’ll start going to conferences again,
(00:02:59):
and I can get out on the road and put some microphones in front of some real people
(00:03:03):
instead of just behind Zoom frames,
(00:03:05):
right?
(00:03:06):
Because that’s what I used to do,
(00:03:08):
and that’s really what makes this stuff come to life,
(00:03:11):
when you can actually…
(00:03:13):
Sit across from somebody or like in my case, doing interviews out on the street.
(00:03:17):
You know, that was always great fun.
(00:03:19):
But the point is to be actually physically with somebody.
(00:03:22):
That’s really the goal here.
(00:03:24):
So hopefully we’ll get to do that at some point in the not too distant future.
(00:03:28):
And yeah, so that’s the news.
(00:03:32):
And so just look for these changes to come about starting next month or so.
(00:03:40):
The guests, the people, the content will change.
(00:03:44):
The guests obviously will be focused on Java.
(00:03:46):
We’ll get some new artwork.
(00:03:48):
We’ll get a new name.
(00:03:50):
And that’s about it.
(00:03:51):
We’ll just keep on going and see where this goes.
(00:03:54):
You can follow me on Twitter at J I M G R I S Jim Grizz.
(00:03:59):
And, um, yeah, that’s it.
(00:04:02):
Talk to you soon.
