(00:00:00):
Hey, it’s Jim.
(00:00:01):
Welcome back to Duke’s Corner.
(00:00:03):
And we were at Java 1 last week.
(00:00:05):
Had a great time, great conference.
(00:00:08):
This was in Las Vegas.
(00:00:10):
And I was taking pictures, talking to developers, talking to friends.
(00:00:14):
I also shot some podcasts as well.
(00:00:17):
Shot some video, basically.
(00:00:19):
I used the audio here, but we’ll put the video on Twitter.
(00:00:23):
And this first one was with Bruno Souza.
(00:00:26):
He got an award and he talks about that, basically a community development award.
(00:00:31):
And he was awarded this in the opening keynote.
(00:00:33):
So he stole the show.
(00:00:35):
It was really great.
(00:00:36):
And yeah, so first up is Bruno and there’ll be four or five more to come.
(00:00:42):
Talk to you soon.
(00:00:43):
Hey everybody,
(00:00:44):
this is Jim Garzanzio from the Java Developer Relations team and we’re back in Java 1,
(00:00:49):
right?
(00:00:49):
And I got my friend Bruno Souzy here from Brazil and we’re in Las Vegas.
(00:00:55):
Isn’t it awesome?
(00:00:56):
Isn’t it awesome to be here?
(00:00:58):
Java 1 is back, right?
(00:00:59):
So I think, you know, seeing so many good people.
(00:01:02):
Thanks a lot to be here, Jim.
(00:01:04):
It’s so good to see you in person.
(00:01:05):
We’ve been talking online for so long, right?
(00:01:08):
So it’s so cool.
(00:01:08):
Thanks.
(00:01:09):
Thanks.
(00:01:09):
Yeah, I’m finished with the Zoom calls, honestly.
(00:01:12):
It’s great that we’re outside of the conference hall here,
(00:01:15):
but we have to work fast because the sun is going to come over and bleach me out.
(00:01:18):
So we had the keynote this morning, right?
(00:01:22):
And you were given an award.
(00:01:23):
You stole the show.
(00:01:24):
So tell me about this award.
(00:01:26):
So I’m just speechless, right?
(00:01:28):
So, you know, it’s an award for, you know, lifetime achievements.
(00:01:33):
So 25 years of community involvement.
(00:01:37):
And I think this is,
(00:01:38):
for me,
(00:01:39):
it’s a great,
(00:01:40):
great honor that the Oracle team and other people that they work with kind of chose
(00:01:47):
me for that.
(00:01:48):
It’s the very first award, right?
(00:01:50):
So the first time that they give an award like this.
(00:01:53):
And so I’m very, very honored.
(00:01:55):
I think that,
(00:01:56):
you know,
(00:01:57):
25 years working with the community and working with people and helping people
(00:01:59):
learn Java and help people become,
(00:02:02):
and actually help people help other people,
(00:02:04):
right?
(00:02:04):
I think that’s the cool part.
(00:02:07):
I don’t actually know, right?
(00:02:09):
But I was very surprised.
(00:02:12):
But thanks.
(00:02:12):
Thanks for all you guys in the Oracle team.
(00:02:15):
Thanks.
(00:02:16):
Well, it’s interesting because I didn’t know.
(00:02:17):
I’m on the job of developer relations.
(00:02:19):
It was a closely held secret.
(00:02:21):
I’m in the audience there.
(00:02:22):
The keynote is wrapping up.
(00:02:23):
I’m taking pictures.
(00:02:24):
I’m actually relaxing and they tell us about that.
(00:02:26):
And I said, oh, I got to run up and take some more pictures.
(00:02:29):
Okay, so long time building community.
(00:02:31):
Why?
(00:02:32):
Why do you build community?
(00:02:33):
Is just something in your heart?
(00:02:36):
So,
(00:02:36):
Jim,
(00:02:37):
I do believe that when we help people to learn,
(00:02:42):
to improve,
(00:02:44):
they can go and they can form their own path.
(00:02:47):
They can take their own lives in their hands and they go do things.
(00:02:51):
And I think that there’s nothing better than that, right?
(00:02:53):
Because technology is something that is just the basis for a lot of things.
(00:02:59):
So if people are not able to do the things that they want,
(00:03:02):
to do the things that they love,
(00:03:03):
if people are not able to do that,
(00:03:04):
then technology is for nothing,
(00:03:06):
right?
(00:03:06):
And so I think that building communities is a great way for us to really come
(00:03:11):
together and we learn from each other.
(00:03:14):
And so each one of us can do our part, right?
(00:03:16):
Can go after our own interests, the things that we want to do.
(00:03:20):
And then at the same time, we build things for others, right?
(00:03:23):
So, but I don’t know, man.
(00:03:25):
I think that’s, for me, I can tell you one thing, Jim.
(00:03:28):
I’ve always been a very shy person, right?
(00:03:30):
I have a difficulty.
(00:03:32):
Yes, I know everyone thinks that, but I have difficulties.
(00:03:35):
For example,
(00:03:35):
if I’m on a,
(00:03:37):
I don’t know,
(00:03:38):
a bank or in a supermarket line,
(00:03:40):
I have difficulty in talking to the person in front of me.
(00:03:42):
I have to overcome my fears, right?
(00:03:44):
But at the same time,
(00:03:46):
people is at the center of technology.
(00:03:50):
There’s no technology without people, right?
(00:03:52):
And so when I learned that, it took me many years to learn that, that people are so important.
(00:03:56):
So when I learned that,
(00:03:58):
then I had to force myself to actually go meet people and go help people and be helping,
(00:04:05):
right?
(00:04:05):
Because that’s a cool thing.
(00:04:06):
The more you help, the more help you get.
(00:04:09):
And I think the community bug kind of bit me
(00:04:14):
You know, when we started, we started helping others and then this whole thing blew up.
(00:04:19):
And so,
(00:04:20):
you know,
(00:04:20):
so Java,
(00:04:20):
the Brazilian Java Society is such an important part of that because a lot of
(00:04:24):
people came together to make that a reality.
(00:04:27):
So, you know,
(00:04:29):
I’m really looking forward to going to Brazil sometime.
(00:04:31):
I’ve never been there.
(00:04:32):
I know you’ve done such a great job.
(00:04:34):
And you were recognized here.
(00:04:36):
And actually, just for everybody out there, when Bruno was announced, it was a standing ovation.
(00:04:42):
So, you know, it’s a reciprocal relationship.
(00:04:45):
It just is really great.
(00:04:47):
So we’re out here.
(00:04:48):
We’re in Las Vegas.
(00:04:49):
It’s the first day of the conference, the first keynote.
(00:04:51):
Now we’re going to go for the second half of the day.
(00:04:55):
There will be a technical keynote tomorrow.
(00:04:57):
And then on…
(00:04:58):
I guess Thursday there’s a community keynote.
(00:05:00):
So there’s three days of keynotes here.
(00:05:03):
So what’s going on in Brazil?
(00:05:05):
When can I come down there and do some stuff?
(00:05:08):
Well, there’s a lot of things going on.
(00:05:10):
Actually, we went back to doing in-person events since last November.
(00:05:14):
So we’ve been doing lots of events.
(00:05:17):
We’re doing the developers conference and campus party.
(00:05:20):
So there’s lots of opportunities for you to come down.
(00:05:22):
So anytime you want, we can figure it out.
(00:05:24):
And one interesting thing is that the Brazilian community is very welcoming.
(00:05:29):
So if you decide to just come there, we’re going to work things out together to make it happen, right?
(00:05:34):
So I got to check with Chad and Char, and I’ll be there as soon as I can.
(00:05:37):
Congratulations on your award.
(00:05:39):
It’s great.
(00:05:40):
I’m really proud of you and jealous as well.
(00:05:44):
Thank you so much, man.
(00:05:45):
i’m still i still don’t i’m still trying to process this whole thing uh so i really
(00:05:50):
would like to thank all the oracle team but not but also all the java champions and
(00:05:54):
all the java’s group leaders uh because that has been you know i could never have
(00:05:58):
done anything if it was not this huge community so java is such a nice you know if
(00:06:03):
you’re watching this
(00:06:05):
and you’re not part of a user group,
(00:06:06):
or you’re not involved in a community,
(00:06:08):
get involved in,
(00:06:08):
man,
(00:06:09):
because really,
(00:06:10):
the community has been an amazing piece of my career,
(00:06:14):
and I think that everyone that participates in the community,
(00:06:16):
everyone that really comes in and comes to help other people,
(00:06:20):
you really grow a lot,
(00:06:21):
right?
(00:06:22):
You learn more,
(00:06:23):
you help other people by helping other people,
(00:06:25):
they help you more,
(00:06:26):
so it’s such a win-win situation that I think that absolutely everyone should get involved.
(00:06:33):
And not only that,
(00:06:34):
Jim,
(00:06:34):
one thing that always strikes me is that community participation is so good for our careers.
(00:06:39):
And it gives so much things for us.
(00:06:43):
And there’s so little people doing it, right?
(00:06:46):
And so you, man, you can be here with us.
(00:06:50):
You can get involved,
(00:06:51):
you can join,
(00:06:52):
be an open source developer or participate in job as a group or any kind of community.
(00:06:57):
Can I tell a quick story?
(00:06:58):
Sure.
(00:06:58):
So I was in Houston for the Houston Java Group five months ago, right?
(00:07:06):
When I came to DevNexus here to the US, I went there to Houston, gave a talk there.
(00:07:11):
And so at my talk, there was a guy, he asked a question, you know, oh, I really want to give back, right?
(00:07:17):
So can I participate in community?
(00:07:19):
Why should I participate in community?
(00:07:20):
And so we had a discussion about that,
(00:07:22):
and I told him how important it was,
(00:07:24):
how good it was going to be for his career.
(00:07:26):
And so then I came back to Houston last week, right?
(00:07:31):
And so when I was there,
(00:07:32):
I got a phone call from him,
(00:07:33):
and he said,
(00:07:34):
Bruno,
(00:07:34):
I want you to come to my community now.
(00:07:37):
So I went and visited his community, and so he launched it, hey!
(00:07:42):
Woo!
(00:07:44):
So after we talked five months ago, he launched his own community.
(00:07:47):
It’s not Java related, it’s a community about side projects, right?
(00:07:52):
So he launched his own community, right?
(00:07:55):
And so five months later, he had a bunch of people
(00:07:59):
exchanging information, exchanging ideas, talking about projects.
(00:08:04):
And so that’s something that you can do, right?
(00:08:06):
You can build a community inside your company.
(00:08:08):
You can build a community inside your city.
(00:08:10):
And that makes all the difference, right?
(00:08:12):
So, you know, this is awesome, Jim.
(00:08:15):
Excellent.
(00:08:15):
Well, it’s good advice.
(00:08:16):
And again, congratulations.
(00:08:18):
And we will see you.
(00:08:20):
back in here.
(00:08:20):
We’ve got to go inside now.
(00:08:21):
It’s beautiful out here,
(00:08:22):
but everyone’s inside,
(00:08:24):
so we’ve got to go to the sessions,
(00:08:25):
and I’ve got to go to the booth.
(00:08:27):
Thank you, and we’ll see you guys later.
(00:08:30):
Thanks a lot, Oracle.
(00:08:31):
Thanks, everyone, for watching.
(00:08:33):
You should come to Java 1.
(00:08:36):
Bye-bye.
