(00:00:00):
Hey, it’s Jim.

(00:00:01):
Welcome back to Duke’s Corner.

(00:00:02):
So this is the third interview I have here from Java 1 in Las Vegas, and this is with Richard Fichtner.

(00:00:09):
And the story here is I just met him at lunch one day.

(00:00:13):
He seemed like a really interesting guy, so I got to get a camera in front of him and see what’s up.

(00:00:20):
Now, he obviously is well-known in the community.

(00:00:23):
It’s just that I don’t know everybody.

(00:00:25):
So at the conference, I’m meeting everybody, a lot of people, anybody new.

(00:00:29):
And so anyway, good conversation.

(00:00:31):
He’s from Germany.

(00:00:32):
He runs Java User Group there.

(00:00:35):
And they do local events as well as entire conferences.

(00:00:38):
And in this quick conversation, we talk about Java 1.

(00:00:42):
We talk about the things he loves about Java.

(00:00:44):
And yeah, so enjoy it.

(00:00:47):
And we’ve got a few more to go.

(00:00:48):
And we’ll talk to you soon.

(00:00:50):
Sure.

(00:00:51):
Sure, let’s do it.

(00:00:52):
Okay.

(00:00:52):
Hey, everybody.

(00:00:53):
This is Jim Grisanzio from the Java Developer Relations team,

(00:00:56):
and we’re here at Java 1 in Las Vegas inside the pavilion,

(00:01:00):
and I’m here with Richard.

(00:01:01):
Richard, I met yesterday at lunch just randomly, and so I wanted to have a chat with him.

(00:01:06):
Richard, welcome.

(00:01:06):
Welcome to the program.

(00:01:08):
Yeah, thank you, Jim.

(00:01:09):
Hey, nice to meet you.

(00:01:11):
That’s what I like about Java conferences,

(00:01:12):
especially Java 1,

(00:01:13):
of course,

(00:01:14):
that you can meet people you’ve never met before.

(00:01:18):
I learned yesterday that you moved to Japan, so this is great.

(00:01:21):
So meeting people from Japan usually don’t happen in Las Vegas, but this just happened.

(00:01:28):
No, this is Vegas, yeah, right?

(00:01:29):
Exactly, exactly.

(00:01:31):
So tell me, let’s just, you know, we just met for the first time, so I don’t know anything about you.

(00:01:35):
So,

(00:01:35):
but first,

(00:01:36):
first,

(00:01:36):
you know,

(00:01:37):
give me some impressions of the conference and then a little bit about you.

(00:01:40):
Yeah, sure.

(00:01:41):
So far, it’s great.

(00:01:44):
Met a lot of people, had a lot of good talks.

(00:01:46):
We went out to have some drinks yesterday, hit the casinos, so lost a lot of money, you know.

(00:01:51):
So you actually gambled?

(00:01:53):
We gambled a bit, but we won, we lost, but we quit.

(00:01:57):
I think that’s the right time, so still fun.

(00:02:00):
Yeah.

(00:02:01):
So where are you from?

(00:02:02):
So I’m from Germany.

(00:02:03):
My name is Richard Fickner.

(00:02:05):
Twitter handle is Richard Fickner.

(00:02:06):
It’s my name.

(00:02:07):
I’m the leader of the Java user group in Oberpfalz, which is a small part of Germany.

(00:02:13):
But we organize a well-known Java conference.

(00:02:16):
It’s called JCon.

(00:02:17):
We ran it three weeks ago in a virtual event.

(00:02:21):
It had 2,600 attendees from 82 countries.

(00:02:24):
It was a great show we put on.

(00:02:27):
So I love Java community.

(00:02:29):
This is what I do, what I love.

(00:02:31):
And that’s what I’m here for, connect to people and exchange ideas.

(00:02:35):
So this is going to be a great opportunity here to come here to Las Vegas and talk

(00:02:39):
to all the people that built the stuff that we are using every day.

(00:02:44):
And so this is like the one special thing I think that Java does better than JCon.

(00:02:50):
You got the Oracle folks here.

(00:02:51):
So if you want to talk to them, you got to come here.

(00:02:55):
Excellent.

(00:02:55):
So we talked a little bit about the community.

(00:02:58):
Talk a little bit about Java, the technology.

(00:03:01):
What makes it special?

(00:03:04):
Yeah, there’s so much things going on right now.

(00:03:06):
So one of my key projects that I’m working on right now is have a way to find a way

(00:03:13):
to scale Java to zero because I see a lot of applications running all the time and

(00:03:19):
I don’t think this is necessary.

(00:03:22):
I was looking at the space and there is so much great solutions.

(00:03:24):
There’s not yet a really good fit,

(00:03:27):
but so much things going on and moving that were not moving a few years ago.

(00:03:31):
So,

(00:03:32):
for example,

(00:03:32):
GrowlVM,

(00:03:34):
Project Layton with the great startup times,

(00:03:36):
also Crack,

(00:03:37):
the coordinated snapshots and the restores of the snapshots going on.

(00:03:43):
There’s so much cloud solutions to support Java as a first-class citizens.

(00:03:48):
So this is so great, and it’s so much new stuff.

(00:03:50):
So when I think back a few years ago, this wasn’t there, nothing.

(00:03:54):
And so this is a really exciting time to be a Java developer,

(00:03:58):
and I cannot tell you how often I hear when I go somewhere and I say,

(00:04:02):
hey,

(00:04:02):
I’ll do Java,

(00:04:03):
and they’re like,

(00:04:04):
Java is that,

(00:04:04):
and I’m like,

(00:04:05):
no,

(00:04:05):
it’s not that.

(00:04:06):
It’s alive and kicking, you know?

(00:04:09):
Is this your first Java one?

(00:04:10):
No,

(00:04:11):
it’s actually my almost 10th Java 1,

(00:04:13):
so my first Java 1 was in 2012,

(00:04:16):
but there were some years where there was just Oracle Code 1,

(00:04:20):
and then of course there was the pandemic,

(00:04:21):
but this is the 10-year anniversary of having this event with a small pause where

(00:04:28):
there was no event.

(00:04:30):
Do you have a favorite memory from any of the previous conferences?

(00:04:35):
Oh, it’s hard to have one.

(00:04:36):
So, of course, there was Elton John.

(00:04:38):
There was one Oracle Cloud or Oracle Open World then party where there was Elton John.

(00:04:44):
This one was really great.

(00:04:45):
I love this one.

(00:04:46):
But from a technology perspective, there were talks that really were fantastic.

(00:04:54):
I remember one talk from Adam Bean.

(00:04:57):
I think it was in 2014 where he talked about Docker containers.

(00:05:01):
And back then, Docker was not a big thing.

(00:05:04):
And this was an eye-opener for me.

(00:05:06):
So, yeah, I guess I go with this one.

(00:05:10):
Excellent.

(00:05:11):
Okay, Richard, well, thank you very much for stopping by.

(00:05:13):
It was great meeting you.

(00:05:14):
And enjoy the rest of the conference.

(00:05:15):
This is only day two, so we have tomorrow as well, all day tomorrow.

(00:05:19):
And, yeah, cool.

(00:05:20):
And we’ll see you around.

(00:05:21):
Thanks.

(00:05:23):
See you guys later.
